The Environment Agency operates under the direction of the Ministry for the Environment. Its role is to promote the protection as well as sustainable use of Iceland’s natural resources, as well as public welfare by helping to ensure a healthy environment, and safe consumer goods.

Areas of operation are i.e. : Monitoring of environmental quality; Evaluation of environmental impact assessment and development plans; etc. Conservation- the management and supervision of designated protected areas.

Their volunteers live and work in some of the most beautiful parts of Iceland throughout the summer. The teams gain experience of a wide range of practical conservation skills while working closely with local staff and other international volunteers. Though their work is focused on the improvement and maintenence of hiking trails, volunteers are also involved in wilderness management and heritage management projects.
